About Today: How to Choose a Computer

If you can't see this email, click here

About

It used to be buying a computer was either a big desktop thing or an expensive notebook thing. Now we have small desktop things, cheap-o notebook things, tablet-looking things (both expensive and affordable). Heck, even that smartphone of yours is more of a computer than we had not too long ago.

An iPad is All You Need
I bet for most folks reading this that an iPad Air would be all that's needed. It can send email, browse the web, visit all the social media sites you can handle, take pictures, shoot and edit movies, help you compose music and write a novel. There's also solitaire for when you are done with all of that.

What to Consider When Buying a Notebook
If you aren't ready for the iPad plunge, maybe a good ol' notebook is what you are after. They're not too big and can handle most of the things you'll throw at it.

On Second Thought, Make it a Big Mac
"No, not a tablet. A notebook computer? What are you, mad?" That was my friend Jan who didn't like any of my suggestions. So we went to the store and bought the biggest Mac made. The screen is so big that he's visibly tanner than he used to be. Or else he has rickets.

How Fast Does Your Computer Need to Be?
There was a time when you turning on your computer took so long that you could go get a cup of coffee, make some toast, churn milk into butter, clean your gutters, write your will, go to the DMV and do your taxes. And that was just my morning! I need speed!

If you can't see this email, click here

About

Call it graduation season all you want -- it might be more accurate to call it debt season. Around the country, high school graduates are gearing up to take out massive loans to finance their college education. And college grads are beginning to grapple with the monumental task of paying off all that debt. Fortunately, we've got some tips on managing your debt load... or to avoid getting into too much debt to begin with.

Can You Do Without a Loan?
Before you even try to get a student loan, first see if you can find a way to finance your education without saddling yourself with a load of debt. Yes, there are a number of alternatives to taking out loans, from scholarships to tuition reimbursement. And you can also find ways to get a less-expensive education...

What Sort of Loan Should You Get?
Even after applying for scholarships and financial aid, you may still find that you need a loan to make your higher-education needs come true. For starters, you'll want to first look into federal student loans before moving on to privately offered loans. Here's a basic overview of where to start.

Managing and Paying Off Your Loans
Congrats, college grad! Once you've landed your first job, you'll need to put together a plan to pay off your education bill. The good news is that you've got a whole litany of loan-repayment optionsthat will allow you to pay off your loans on a manageable schedule.

What Happens if You Can't Pay?
Hey, we get it. The job market isn't always easy on fresh-faced college grads, so you might not have the scratch to pay off your bills right away. Unfortunately, it's not a simple matter of just declaring bankruptcy and starting fresh, but you do have some options for loan forgiveness if you're truly unable to pay up.

About Today: Moving Into Your New (or First!) Apartment

If you can't see this email, click here

About

It's early summer and you know what that means: it's time to start apartment hunting! Historically, New York City's Moving Day—the day when every lease in the city expired and renters had to pack up and ship out—was on the first of May. (I'm sure you can imagine the chaos of thousands of NYC residents dragging their stuff through the streets.) These days, many leases end during the summer months, when college students are looking for their first apartments, making competition higher than usual. Plus, those 90-degree days make moving even less fun. We can't keep you from sweating as you drag your sofa up a high-floor walk-up, but we can offer plenty of tips, tricks and advice to make your apartment hunt and move a little bit easier on your sanity ... and your back.

Finding the Right Apartment
As a renter who has changed apartments five times in four years—and in NYC, no less—I can say this with complete confidence: apartment hunting can be a total nightmare. Not only does it raise soul-searching questions like, Which neighborhood do I want to live in? Do I need one bathroom or two? How much rent can I afford? Does my cat really love me?, but it's totally stressful—and expensive—too. But fear not, my fellow renters! We've got plenty of tips and tricks to make your apartment search as simple as possible.

Furnishing Your New Apartment
So, you've found the perfect apartment in the perfect location, with an awesome landlord who allows your pets. And, just FYI, you are now a legend among renters. Now you need to furnish the place! Check out apartment-sized sofas and stylish accent furniture for space-saving seating options; define spaces with area rugs or creative room dividers; and look for furniture with sneaky storage, like coffee tables, ottomans or bedframes with drawers.

Fun Home Accessories
I've said it before and I'll say it ten million more times: home accessories are the absolute easiest way to dress up your space. Plus, they're completely reversible, so you know you'll get your security deposit back at the end of your lease. Toss some bold, DIY throw pillows on your sofa, blend antique treasures with modern accents on your mantle or amazing, DIY coffee table or mix different fabrics for an eclectic, homey vibe. And hey, if you're not in love with the results, remember: you can undo your decor in mere seconds.

Renter-Friendly Wall Decor
Whether your landlord doesn't allow painting or you just don't feel like painting (hey, I hear you—it's a lot of work!), there are plenty of ways for renters to add color to their walls. Try arranging a huge gallery wall with your favorite artwork and photos or, if you're feeling really ambitious, hang temporary wallpaper. I personally love these colorful, abstract art DIYs
