About

Spring is a time for fresh beginnings, which is probably why so many people choose this time of year to do some cleaning up and reorganizing around the house. But why stop at cleaning out your closet and holding a garage sale? Your finances also need some regular maintenance, whether it's reallocating your investments or doing something about your mounting debt. Here are a few ways you can spring-clean your money this weekend.

Organize Your Investment Dollars
While it's best to avoid constantly tinkering with your investments, you also don't want to just dump your money in an IRA and then leave it there for three decades. Spend the weekend deciding which types of accounts you want to use for your retirement funds, and then figure out where you want to invest those funds in order to balance growth and risk.

Sort Out Your Debt Situation
Being up to your ears in clutter is one thing; being up to your ears in debt is much more dire. Whether it's student loan, credit card or mortgage debt, it can wind up snowballing on you in a way that can leave your credit score and your financial future in tatters. Fixing the problem won't happen overnight, but there are measures you can take now to start moving in the right direction.

Freshen Up Your Resume
When is the last time you updated your resume? We're guessing the answer is "The last time I was actively looking for a new job," and that's an issue. Even if you're relatively happy at your current job, it's a fine idea to spruce up your resume now -- you could get laid off, or fired, or simply get sick of your job. If and when that happens, it's best to be prepared.
